NOTES / BEHIND THE WORLDSRendering tricks, difficult surprises and the code behind the atmosphere.

The strange bits that made it work.

The bugs that fooled us, the ideas that clicked, and the tiny decisions that made a world feel alive.

PARK-SUITE 420 / REFLECTIONSThe mirror needed its own version of the hotel.008
008REFLECTED WORLD · SEPARATE REALITY

The mirror needed its own version of the hotel.

A reflection is not just another camera. Mirroring the world flips winding; the pass must account for it. Once correct, the glass can render its own lighting, material age and objects—letting the same room tell two incompatible stories.

  • Reflect the world, not a reconstructed lookAt camera
  • Reverse culling for the reflection pass
  • Unselected mirrors still draw as dark glass
CRYSTAL PALACE / PLAYABLE OPTICSThe prop became a real instrument.006
006TWO CAMERAS · ONE DISCOVERY

The prop became a real instrument.

The stereoscope is more than a lens-shaped overlay. Two offset cameras render the Palace into separate eye targets; focus changes convergence, and a fictional echo becomes readable when the views align. The optics became the puzzle.

  • A 64 mm camera baseline
  • Bounded per-eye targets keep the extra views manageable
  • The ordinary screen shows paired images, not glasses-free 3D
THE HOLLOW MARCH / ATMOSPHEREThe scariest thing in the woods has no attack.007
007DANGER IS A SYSTEM. DREAD IS ANOTHER.

The scariest thing in the woods has no attack.

Combat intensity brings percussion into the score. The Watcher has a separate, slowly detuning layer—and does not attack. Separating danger from dread lets the forest unsettle you without turning every encounter into another health bar.

  • Procedural score follows the encounter state
  • Forest and crypt use different generated reverb spaces
  • Silhouette and sound do the work before an enemy name appears
MOUNTAIN MYSTERY / INTERACTION DESIGNThe crypt looked alive. Then we tried to walk through it.005
005SAME BRIEF · UNEQUAL REFINEMENT · THREE PLAYABLE SNAPSHOTS

The crypt looked alive. Then we tried to walk through it.

A convincing crypt is only half the trick. The first Sol version still behaved like a staged page: movement, camera direction and puzzle exits needed separate attention. The useful refinement was turning scenery into a place you could actually investigate.

  • Astra builds meshes with Three.js
  • Opus raymarches a crypt and a separate terrain heightfield
  • Sol mixes explorable passages with staged chapter scenes
THE LAKE / SEMANTIC VERIFICATIONThe boat passed the tests. The stern was still open.001
001TESTS CAN VERIFY STRUCTURE WITHOUT VERIFYING MEANING

The boat passed the tests. The stern was still open.

The mesh checker was happy. The boat was visibly open at the stern and split at the stem. A mathematically closed surface was not the same thing as a convincingly closed hull—and that difference survived every green test until we looked at the shape.

  • A transom closed the open-ended hull
  • The inner skin now meets the outer at the stem
  • Visual and semantic review remained necessary after the test passed
THE LAKE / PERFORMANCEWe hid most of the trees. The GPU barely noticed.002
002MEASURE THE BOTTLENECK, NOT THE MOST VISIBLE LOOP

We hid most of the trees. The GPU barely noticed.

Culling cut the drawn instances by roughly five times. The frame time barely moved. The expensive part was the atmosphere: volumetric marching, covered sky pixels and water work the camera did not need. The win came from asking which pixels were worth shading.

  • Volumetrics consumed more than half the frame
  • A lean tree budget matched the full budget under the canopy
  • Only shoreline trees pay for the full branch detail
WAKE / SYSTEM DESIGNTwo pixels let an alien sky light the ship.004
004A TINY INTERFACE KEEPS THREE ENDINGS INTERCHANGEABLE

Two pixels let an alien sky light the ship.

The ship should feel the thing outside before you see it. Each anomaly shader writes its light direction and colour into a two-pixel probe. The interior reads that signal, so three very different reveals can illuminate the same ship through one tiny interface.

  • Black hole, gas giant or artificial visitor
  • The exterior renders only through visible viewport rectangles
  • Surface detail drops below the pixel scale with distance
WESTWALL / PROCEDURAL STORYTELLINGThirteen chapters. One landscape that remembers.003
003THE TRANSITION IS PART OF THE ARGUMENT

Thirteen chapters. One landscape that remembers.

The camera stays in one landscape while its history changes. Moss retreats, concrete becomes raw, ash replaces pollen, and later the undergrowth returns. Continuous story values turn the passage between chapters into part of the experience, rather than a cut to another scene.

  • About 11,000 generated dragon’s teeth
  • Documented material volume becomes a 270 m cube
  • Sources, disagreements and reconstruction limits remain visible
